Delivering the ingredients for healthier living

Our commitment to health

Instacart Health is on a mission to ensure every person has access to the food and products that help them thrive. We build the tools and technology to empower healthy living. Working alongside health professionals, hospitals, businesses, nonprofits, researchers, and policymakers, we aim to champion nutrition access, resources, and education. See how we can work together to revolutionize health for all.

Areas of focus

  • Nutrition access

Today, roughly 1 in 7 U.S. households struggle to get fresh, nutritious food.1 Instacart reaches more than 98% of U.S. households — including 95% of residents in low-income, low-access areas often called food deserts. But access is about more than geography. For the millions of Americans facing financial barriers, we accept EBT SNAP at thousands of local stores across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. We also accept health benefit cards and HSA/FSA payments, and we've built Fresh Funds — our own stipend system that enables organizations to fund and measure their own category specific food and household essentials programs at scale.

  • Healthier choices

There's no one-size-fits-all definition of health. We build tools to support every person's unique journey. From Health Tags and nutrition facts to shoppable recipes and AI-powered personalization and preferences, our technology puts trusted information at every customer's fingertips — making healthy choices a little easier, every time they shop.

  • Food as medicine

Instacart Health helps partners run scaled programs that address both clinical and social needs. We work with organizations who share our belief that food and nutrition are essential for disease prevention and treatment. Our solutions include Fresh Funds stipend programs, Care Carts via Instacart Business, and shoppable guidance through the Instacart Developer Platform (IDP) – all built for scale, customization, and detailed measurement.

For Organizations

  • Fresh Funds

Fresh Funds allow organizations to offer category-specific stipends, giving recipients the ability to shop from eligible categories — like fresh and frozen produce — using a digital credit redeemable at any store on Instacart. Fresh Funds can be one-time or set to auto-reload on a recurring basis. They can also be combined with a credit/debit card and other benefit card funds within the same order.

Health plans, providers, managed care organizations, community-based organizations, and employers use Fresh Funds to launch and scale programs across the full continuum of care — from maternal and behavioral health to chronic condition management, post-discharge support, and long-term services. Programs can be self-administered or fully managed through Instacart Health Services.

  • Care Carts via Instacart Business

Care Carts via Instacart Business allow professionals to send personalized groceries and everyday essentials directly to recipients doors.

Organizations use Care Carts for two primary use cases: fulfilling medically tailored food orders for recipients with specific dietary or clinical needs, and supporting those who are unable to shop for themselves — including participants in disease management, hospital-at-home, post-discharge, and long-term services programs.

Unlike Fresh Funds, which offer individuals a flexible stipend to spend, Care Carts puts the ordering in the hands of the care team — making it the preferred solution for providers who need more control, customization, and local same-day fulfillment. Flexible business tools including invoicing, order guides, one corporate account for your entire team, and customizable approval processes keep programs running efficiently. Recipients benefit from orders fulfilled by local, trusted stores with the option for real-time delivery status updates.

  • Shoppable Guidance via the
Instacart Developer Platform

Trusted nutrition advice is essential but often difficult to act on — using Instacart, we can make it shoppable. The Instacart Developer Platform (IDP) enables organizations to make their nutrition advice, recipes, and health content instantly shoppable, so customers can go from guidance to groceries in minutes.

Leading health-focused organizations use IDP to build scalable, shoppable experiences directly into their digital platforms — including the Thrive Global Cookbook, designed to make budget-friendly nutrition accessible for families. IDP Partners span meal planning apps, personalized nutrition platforms, and chronic disease management programs.

For consumers

  • Health Wallet

Getting healthy food and essentials shouldn't depend on knowing which benefits you have or where you can use them. The Instacart Health Wallet centralizes all the ways you can pay — so every customer can make the most of the benefits available to them, applied automatically to eligible items at checkout.

Instacart accepts EBT SNAP across all 50 states and Washington D.C., with nearly 180 retail banners and more than 30,000 stores reaching nearly 98% of SNAP households nationwide. We also accept FSA and HSA cards at every Instacart retailer that carries eligible products. For customers with supplemental health benefits and rewards, many cards can be used on Instacart. For customers who are recipients of a partner organization’s Fresh Funds, these can also be used on Instacart separately or in combination with other payment methods.
